Frequently Asked Questions

1 / Does a buccal or TMJ massage hurt?

All of our facial massage treatments that incorporates trigger point and acupressure has a slight pressure to it and we do not use aggressive techniques as the facial skin is more delicate. The massage is smooth and not painful. If you see other spas aggressively massaging the face, they are not being conscious of how it will affect the elasticity of the facial skin, and it can cause more harm than good. A good facial massage should feel relaxing, reduce tension, stress, and alleviate any bloating or puffiness. We do not use any products for the intra-oral buccal massage (only gloves) and the buccal session lasts about 10-20 minutes depending on condition. Deep pressure work is not used for any first time clients, only repeat clients who have tapered up to a deeper tissue massage.  Overworking the masseter may cause irritation.

For those with TMJ pain, best results occur over time and with regular TMJ therapy sessions (not overnight), we offer package deals for those who need more therapy.

2 / Can I do botox and get your facials at the same time? What if I already have botox or fillers?

Any cosmetic procedures like botox, fillers, injections, deep chemical peels, acne treatments, should be spaced out between 2-3 weeks and you should not arrive to your appointment if you have a scheduled treatment for any of the above within that timeframe.

3 / What should I do after my Facial massage or TMJ treatment ?

This question is unique for all as each skin type is different but most clients will feel relaxed, refreshed, and feel a reduction in tension. Like a massage anywhere else in the body, you may feel slightly sore especially if you have a lot of fluid or blocked circulation in any areas of your face prior. When releasing the fascia muscle it is imperative to drink a lot of water, rest, and do not use harsh products for at least 48 hours after. Slight redness or tingling may occur afterwards but completely normal and usually only happens to a very small percentage of clients who fall in the extra sensitive skin category. This is normal and not to be alarmed as any redness or tenderness will subside within a day or two. To ease any inflammation, cold and hot compression may be applied to the skin. You can also take some ibuprofen to reduce any side effects.

4 / What Skincare products are recommended?

We are a boutique facial spa and rotate a few brands per year based on availability and suitable prices. We have a main skin care organic line we use called Eminence. However so far clients love and have responded very well to: Skinceuticals, SkinMedica, Obagi and Jan Marini - Great for all skin types.

5/ I have a lot of TMJ Pain and jaw issues, is there a way to fix or cure it?

Those with locked jaw, chronic pain that hurts when touched, or very inflamed (swollen) jaw area should consult a doctor for further testing such as x-rays, CT scans, or MRIs to find out the underlying problem. For those with extreme pain, massaging the area or overstimulating it is not recommended. Most times massage therapy is helpful where there is mild to normal muscle tension. Many clients with TMJ respond well to regular massage therapy; however, it is not exactly a "cure" for TMJ as it is used to manage symptoms only. We want to reiterate that we are not a medical office and thus cannot prescribe, diagnose, or "cure" severe jaw issues or facial asymmetry. TMJ is a very complicated disorder and requires several doctor visits to find the right fit for the specific issue. We do work with several medical offices who refer patients to see us, however when clients have not managed their symptoms and comes in with extreme pain, we would have to unfortunately refer them back to their doctor until it is manageable enough to be able to touch around the jaw area comfortably. (a catch 22, we understand).

6/ Can I do physical therapy, see a chiropractor, get acupuncture, do Botox AND get a face massage?

YES! You can definitely see other providers and set a program that works for you. Massage therapy is very complimentary to other modalities. However, you should space all treatments apart preferably 2-3 weeks. We do not suggest doing everything all "at once" as more is not more. If in doubt, ask your doctor if massage therapy is appropriate for you.

7/ How long until I see results after my facials?

This question is very common for clients pushing for quick overnight results. Unfortunately, there is no such thing aside from Botox, surgery, or lasers (which we do not do). Facial massages are all natural, provide a gradual release, but will not "change" your face like Botox or plastic sugery can. Although it's a natural approach buccal massages can definitely provide quick relief for facial puffiness, bloating, facial tension, and stress, however due to everyone's unique lifestyle and stress factors, most clients need several consistent sessions (4-10 over a span of a few months) to really reap the long-term benefits. It's like asking a trainer at the gym if one session is enough, it is not. However, muscles do contract, grow, heal, change, and become more flexible over time. Consistency is key! - That is why we also offer discounted packages for the best care.
